6 #GIVINGTUESDAY HACKS

October is the perfect time to review or begin or improve your 2017 #GivingTuesday campaign. Here are 6 #GivingTuesday Hacks just in time to jump-start great results.

#GivingTuesday Tips

What is #GivingTuesday? #GivingTuesday is a counterpoint to the consumerism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. It started with just a few hundred nonprofits in 2012 and it has since blossomed into an international day of giving around the globe. In 2015, the total donations for the day were up to $116.4 million from $45.6 million a year before!

#GivingTuesday is the launch of your year-end giving season. It starts the energy and excitement to carry you through December 31st. Think of #GivingTuesday as an online kickoff.

1. #GivingTuesday Goals

Your giving Tuesday goals can be about more than just dollars raised. Here are some different goals to set:
• Number of donors
• Number of new donors
• Number of volunteers/hours (if you are including an activity)
• Number of recurring donors
• Percentage participation among key groups like staff, board, alumni, or clients
Set goals

It is imperative to have a clear goal that you, your team, and your supporters can rally around. If you had a #GivingTuesday campaign last year, you can use those results as a benchmark. Another great goal-setting tool is to use a giving pyramid. Map out what you will need to get to your goal. One or two donors at the top level with more donors at the lowest level.

2. This is a chance to tell fresh stories, attract new younger supporters, accelerate your social media presence or diversify your fundraising channels.

3. Make a plan

You need a concrete plan with goals and a calendar timeline. You won’t know if you’re on track without a detailed plan!
Inspire your donors to give

4. Use wonderful stories and an easy to use donation page with a prominent donate now button.

5. Show your gratitude

Have an instant thank you letter to send to your donors. Have a system in place to welcome new donors so they feel valued and appreciated right from the start.

6. Try a new idea
This is the perfect chance to try something new. Your #GivingTuesday goal will probably be a smaller one and you’ll be attracting lots of new donors, so this is your best opportunity of the year to try new ideas.

CrowdFunding Success With Dazzling Stories

 Dazzling Storytelling Means Crowdfunding Success

If you are looking for a successful example of crowdfunding using stellar storytelling, look no further than The Smithsonian’s campaign to “Save the Ruby Slippers!” The Smithsonian conducted this campaign to preserve Dorothy’s Red Shoes on Kickstarter in October 2016 and raised $300,000 in just a few days!!!

Of course, “Save the Ruby Slippers” is a great campaign because we can all relate to Dorothy’s shoes and what they mean to our childhood and our image of home. So what else can learn from The Smithsonian’s success?

What made this crowdfunding campaign a success?

  • They told us what would be involved in the conservation.
  • They told us why The Smithsonian needed us.
  • They answered questions about where their funding comes from.
  • They explained what was happening to the slippers.
  • They showed pictures of how they would be preserved.
  • They explained why it was important.
  • They told us what goes into the process of conservation.
  • They talked about the amount they needed and backed that goal up by explaining what was included in the budget and how much each item cost.
  • They talked about their own history.
  • They explained where the slippers would be displayed.

Did they stop when they reached their goal?

No!!

When the Smithsonian reached their $300,00 goal, they were ready to stretch the project. They announced they needed $85,000 to conserve and display the Scarecrow costume.

And, they thanked their donors. They thanked them for getting them to the goal and explained that the slippers would now be kept sparkling for future generations. They made sure that donors felt like team members who had accomplished a great success.

Why #GivingTuesday

Why #GivingTuesday?

#GivingTuesday, a national day of giving, makes the perfect Kick-Off for Year-End Fundraising! Jump start your year-end appeals with this major social media opportunity! #GivingTuesday is an exceptional occasion to begin your last and final month of fundraising.

#GivingTuesday empowers our donors and supporters to raise money on our behalf! Getting your donors involved is of strategic importance!

How do you get them involved? Which techniques do you use?

Is #GivingTuesday a Crowdfunder or Peer-to-Peer Fundraising?

Should you do a crowdfunding campaign or a peer-to-peer campaign?

According to Classy.org CEO & co-founder, Scot Chisholm, crowdfunding gained mainstream appeal for nonprofits after 2009 but it’s been around a long time. In fact, in 1884, Joseph Pulitzer raised over a hundred thousand dollars in six months for his newspaper, The New York World.

So, is crowdfunding the same fundraising vehicle as peer-to-peer fundraising? You hear the terms interchanged constantly.

Actually peer-to-peer fundraising is a specific type of crowdfunding. Now you know!

  • Crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter are what you call single-tier because the user sets up a single campaign page and then reaches out to friends and family for contributions.
  • Peer-to-peer fundraising is multi-tier because after the user or the organization sets up a campaign page other individuals can set up their own personal fundraising pages underneath it to share with their friends and family. Thereby getting the name peer-to-peer fundraising.
  • Peer-to-peer fundraising can have hundreds or even thousands of people fundraising simultaneously for a single initiative. That’s why peer-to-peer campaigns are ideal for #GivingTuesday.

Why peer-to-peer fundraising is ideal for non-profits

 Peer-to-peer fundraising is effective.

  • Peer-to-peer fundraising is especially popular with your younger supporters.
  • Peer-to-peer gives your donors the opportunity to tell their stories in their own words. They get to individualize the cause and explain why it personally matters to them.
  • Personal fundraising pages provide a great vehicle for expression.
  • Peer-to-peer fundraising provides avenues for social reinforcement. Your donors, especially your younger donors, love the ability to share their passion for a cause and they like to share it with their friends and their family. They love it even more when these actions are reinforced publicly.
  • This type of fundraising also gives individual fundraisers the ability to see how their goals fit into the fundraising goal of the organization so it really encourages collaboration. This sense of community is really the reason that crowdfunding and peer-to-peer fundraising have been such a success.
  • Many of the peer-to-peer platforms give you the ability to communicate directly with individual donors throughout the campaign and show progress in real time. The real time updates and responses give your donors the sense that their effort is having an immediate impact and motivates your supporters to achieve their goals or possibly even raise them.

Where do you start on your peer-to-peer campaign?

There are many peer-to-peer fundraising tools to choose from. This article about the 15 best peer-to-peer fundraising tools is a resource that will help you pick a platform that meets your needs.

Tier 1: Select your platform and design your campaign page with your story, mission, photos, and possibly a video. Be creative and examine the many examples you can find online to give you inspiration!

Tier 2: Select a group of volunteers, board members, and staff that enjoy social media, love your mission and that you can count on to be your solid team. They are your team fundraising leaders, each having a page that reaches out to their family and peers with your story, your #GivingTuesday project.

All contributions will roll to the main campaign page and it is transparent that all donations are secure, going to your non-profit, and tax deductible due to your 501(c)3 status. The total progress of your campaign will be shown on the main campaign page as well.

#GivingTuesday Empowers Your Donors

The takeaway is that peer-to-peer fundraising is a type of crowdfunding that allows you to empower your donors and your supporters to raise money on your behalf.

Historically peer-to-peer has been the primary method of crowdfunding adopted by nonprofits. And why not? Nonprofit organizations have existing supporters and donors who are passionate about their cause and really are willing to fundraise.

#GivingTuesday is certainly a perfect time to allow your donors and supporters to express their personal connection to your cause. Go get em! Here are 2016 tips, a great to-do checklist for #GivingTuesday video from BlockbusterFundraising!

#GivingTuesday

unnamed (4)Are You ready for #GivingTuesday? Seems like #GivingTuesday is now the starting line for the final month of fundraising, a month that you depend on to be fabulous! Seems to me as a former Development Director that you absolutely have to get your team ready to participate because as a Development Department, you can not do it alone! You need your staff, your volunteers, your board and all your peeps to want to carry the message out and about! Without their help, your returns will be minimal.

In the past two weeks, I have attended so many webinars and read so many articles about how to make #GivingTuesday successful and am thinking about rounding it out to five best practices and wondering if I can do it with all the information overload doing jumping jacks in my brain. Let’s get started.

  1.  YOU NEED A STORY that will make em cry! When I work with development peeps, I remind them often to always always be looking for their top 4 or 5 stories of the year, real life situations that made everyone on the staff feel deep emotion and involvement with the organization, creating the moment that you know you love what you do! Then, craft that story and get photos and work it until it’s close to perfection and get ready to get it out there.
  2. YOU NEED A VILLAGE! You can’t do this alone, no matter how good the story, how great the graphics, how much you care, it all depends on having a team, a village of peeps that love your mission and are willing to share with their peeps and network. Put together a team that feels comfortable with social media and not too shy to ask for a favor. a lot of peer-to-peer fundraising is a personal networking method of helping one another and supporting each others cause.
  3. GET A MATCHING GIFT! SEE NOTE AND NEW INFORMATION BELOW    A Matching Gift at year-end is always just a terrific motivator and can make a impressive difference in your return. I’ve seen it work very well with #GivingTuesday campaigns and would suggest your give it a try. Usually the #GivingTuesday goal is not so high as to preclude you from finding a donor who would be happy to have their year-end gift matched this way for such a good cause. Give it a try!
  4. GET YOUR BOARD ON BOARD. Your board has probably been looking for a way to assist you in your year end goals without having to come up with the huge checks themselves, so they are most likely going to be glad to help share your #GivingTuesday story with their peers and social media peeps. ASK Them!
  5. MAKE SURE YOUR DONATION PAGE S TIED TO THE CAMPAIGN AND WORKS! Remember how many of your donations will be mobile. How does your landing page or donation page look? Test it out and not on just one laptop! It needs to be responsive and have impact on every level. Remember that over $45,000,000 was raised last year so it’s not a waste of your time to tweek your plan! Good luck!!
